Some business jobs follow the same steps every time. Others begin with a question and need a few rounds of investigation. That difference is a better starting point than asking which automation feature is newer.
n8n introduced its new Agents experience on September 25, 2026. Agents can use workflows as tools, while workflows can call an agent. The existing AI Agent node remains available. The new experience is in preview, so confirm availability and behavior in your installation.
Choose the shape of the work
For a predictable sequence, start with a workflow. A form arrives, required fields are checked, and the lead goes to a known destination.
For an open-ended task, consider an agent with a narrow brief. A team member asks why a customer account needs attention, and the next lookup depends on what the first one reveals.
Our n8n workflow guide provides the background. Neither design removes the need for ownership and testing.
Keep important actions controlled
A useful hybrid lets an agent investigate while a fixed workflow performs a tightly defined action. For example, a tool may add one note to an identified record, not provide unrestricted access to the whole customer system.
Define the permitted input, expected output and rejection behavior before connecting the tool. Keep customer-facing writes behind appropriate review.
Put these ideas to work.
From a specific fix to a complete website, we can help you define the scope and get it done.
Share your goals. We usually reply within one business day with questions and practical next steps.
Compare two small prototypes
Use the same fictional task in both designs. Record completion quality, review effort and failure behavior. Include missing information and an unavailable service.
Do not judge only the smooth demonstration. A design that asks a sensible question may be more useful than one that confidently performs the wrong action.
Pick the simpler maintainable option
Choose the design your team can inspect, support and safely change. An agent is not automatically better because it has more freedom.
See the AI agent and workflow concepts guide for terminology. Premier Sol's n8n automation service can help scope a first use case with clear boundaries.
Frequently asked questions
Do the new Agents replace every n8n workflow?
No. Fixed workflows remain useful, and the two approaches can be combined. Choose according to the task.
Should my first agent have access to every system?
No. Start with the smallest set of tools needed for one task and test the access boundaries.
What should I compare in a pilot?
Task quality, review effort, failure handling and maintainability, not just how quickly a demo finishes.
